Czech Hydrogen Backbone SOUTH
The Czech Hydrogen Backbone SOUTH project focuses on connecting hydrogen transmission systems in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. The goal is to ensure the transport of pure hydrogen from two main supply regions outside the EU (notably Ukraine and North Africa) and also to supply the area along the corridor according to the expected demand development, especially in Germany. In the territory of the Czech Republic, this involves the modification of one of the pipelines of the southern branch between the IP Lanžhot and the VIP Waidhaus border points with a total length of 403 km.
The project was included in the first list of Projects of Common Interest/Projects of Mutual Interest (PCI/PMI) adopted in 2023, under number 10.4 - Generic corridor aiming to transmit hydrogen from Ukraine to Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, and Germany. The project was not nominated for the second PCI/PMI list due to the greater convenience and variability of the northern route, see also Czech Hydrogen Backbone NORTH.
The current plan for the SOUTH project assumes commissioning at the end of 2035.
Further information about the project can be found in the national Ten-Year Network Development Plan 2026—2035 (in Czech only), Annex A, pages 22-23. We will be happy to answer questions about the project and its planning at the e-mail address h2readiness@net4gas.cz.
